Hamburger Robot
One standout in the robotic kitchen space is Flippy, a robotic arm that grills burgers and fries food. Flippy uses AI algorithms to learn and enhance its cooking abilities unlike typical machine arms.1 Programmers can instruct it to follow recipes and adapt to various cooking styles. Miso Robotics, a tech company focused on kitchen automation since 2016, designed and built Flippy. The robot already works in several restaurants, including Chipotle, Wing Zone, and White Castle. It’s also expanding into the Middle Eastern market, where well-known chains like KFC and Pizza Hut are adopting it. Earlier this year, CaliExpress, a fully autonomous restaurant in California, opened, and Flippy exclusively operates it.
Spaghetti Robot
Believe it or not, robots are making pasta too! P-Robo, a restaurant robot, prepares spaghetti using AI-driven image recognition technology. With its advanced features, P-Robo can whip up a pasta dish in just 45 seconds using pre-cooked noodles, and it can cook up to 90 pasta plates per hour.2 The robot is a key feature at E Vino Spaghetti, a restaurant in Tokyo. Its efficiency could offer a solution to Japan’s labor shortage, as it performs with the skill of a seasoned chef.
Pizza Robot
Apparently, technology enthusiasts have a love for Italian cuisine! Not only did they create robots to make pasta, but they’ve also developed pizza-cooking robots. The Picnic Pizza Robot streamlines pizza production, and artificial intelligence enables it to churn out 300 pizzas per hour. The robot made its debut at T-Mobile Park in Seattle in 2019.3 This year, Picnic Works, the company behind the Picnic Pizza Robot, partnered with Roboworx to launch a national rollout of Picnic Pizza Stations.4 Soon, you could grab a pizza from a vending machine near your apartment in just two minutes.
Restaurant robots are rapidly changing the food industry. They help restaurants cut costs and optimize operations. Still, the question remains: will robots completely replace chefs? After all, customers expect their meals to be prepared by skilled chefs, not machines.
